Advanced Search: complete a form to focus your search

To access the Advanced Features of Google, Click the More search tools pull down menu.


Timeline: Use view:timeline followed by topic your are searching

Realtime: Search up to the second social network posts about current topics.

  • Enter topic
  • Adjust date and time if desired

  • Refine a searches to work geographically — not just with keywords —
  • Sample search: Farmers Market in Ithica

  • Advanced Image Search - Usage Rights ->Labeled for reuse
  • Your results will only include images labeled with a license that allows you to copy and/or modify the image in ways specified in the license

  • Search in the Web for the keyword - then expand the Show Options. Listed toward the bottom is, Sites with Images. This will display the images from the search.

Alerts -

Filetype: .pdf, .ppt, .doc Example: 21st Century Learning filetype:ppt

Site: Google will restrict the results to the type or specific websites in the domain. Example: site:gov obama or obama

Tips - In addition to providing easy access to billions of web pages, Google has many special features to help you find exactly what you are looking for.


  • Can slice and dice this search as well from a web search, using the +Show Options feature.
  • Be sure to read the "About This Book" to determine the original copyright date.
  • Can add to a private book list, search for the book from online resources or libraries that join the community.

  • Research resources - includes journal and conference papers, theses and dissertations, academic books, pre-prints, abstracts, technical reports and other scholarly literature from all broad areas of research. It also includes court opinions and patents.

  • Search through Picasa for images that can be reused as noted by the Copyright notation. In addition can limit search to size, face, etc. Can also search by tags.
  • Can use to upload pictures from school used for school publications, then tag photos with captions and faces and search for an event to view. The pictures can be stored in a private album or public.


Reader: - tool for gathering, reading, and sharing all the interesting blogs and websites you read on the web.

  • Add a widget on a webpage to translate the entire page. This will add a Translate Bar to the top of the webpage.
  • Add a button to the toolbar to change a webpage to a desired language
  • Within a Web Search, can also translate to other languages and display the results in other languages.

  • Either create an account or don't delete your cookies. If you don't sign in, your iGoogle page is saved just on your computer.
  • Rather than adding too many things to your page which can make it load slowly and increase the chance of browser crashing. instead create multiple tabs (e.g. one for games, another for RSS feeds, etc).
  • Most of the time when you type in a name for your tab, it will automatically add content, depending on the tab's name. Uncheck the "I'm feeling lucky" box if you'd rather start from scratch and add your own gadgets.
  • Gadgets now have a Canvas view

Google Body:
  • Explore the human body through zooming, spinning and viewing images
  • Use Google Chrome as your browser for this to work on your computer

Google Lookup Formula in Spreadsheet
  • Use this tool in a spreadsheet to search for attributes on specified enties. Example: Using three midwestern states, lookup the square miles of each, the governor of each and the state bird of each.

Find a top news story from a different country and save a photo related to the article. Create a presentation called "The Word Today" with a brief caption for each photo.
